Explore and photograph the Dunstanburgh Castle and Coast on this new 2025 Northumberland Landscape Photography Workshop delivered by two professional landscape photographers based in Northumberland.

  • Date 16th March 2025
  • Time 10am - 4.30pm
  • Max. group size 8 participants
  • Cost £80 per person

One of the many things Northumberland does well is castles. Dunstanburgh Castle is one of the most photogenic. Standing high on a craggy headland, the castle has been a draw for artists for centuries (it was one of Turner’s favourite subjects).

On this workshop we’ll spend the day exploring the Dunstanburgh Castle coastline, starting on the rocky shoreline near the fishing village of Craster south of the castle. We’ll then go to Howick and the Bathing House to explore the coastline there. We’ll then finish on the sandy dunes of Embleton Bay and the northern view of Dunstanburgh Castle. Across the day we’ll be shooting a wide variety of subjects including rock textures, the flow of tidal water, as well as views of Dunstanburgh Castle itself. Throughout the workshop we’ll be on hand to answer your photography-related questions and to offer advice on how to make the most of this wonderful stretch of coastline.

Useful information

This workshop is suitable for photographers of all levels of experience and ability, from absolute beginners to those with more experience. The group size is limited to eight to allow Jason and David to devote ample time throughout the day to every participant.

Bring with you the camera equipment (camera, lenses and filters) you already own and would normally take out for the day. A tripod will be useful, but don’t worry if you don’t have one: it's not essential and we may be able to lend you one for the workshop.

We will be walking over uneven ground throughout the day. It's likely to be cold too. Be sure to wear warm and windproof clothing, and bring waterproofs just in case. You will also need sturdy and comfortable and waterproof walking shoes or wellies. There will be a reasonable amount of walking required during the day. Although the Dunstanburgh Castle coastline is relatively flat, a reasonable degree of fitness and mobility is recommended.
